About the Nuzzle

We tried every type of commercial grazing muzzle on our easy-keeper horses. We had issues with reliability, tooth wear, and discomfort. Most of all, the horses hated wearing them and would turn away when we had to put them on.

One day, Jen commented on how our horses loved foraging through their OptiMizer nets  and encouraged me to make a grazing muzzle out of the netting. So I did. And our horses did not even seem to notice wearing them. Yet, I observed a significant reduction in the amount of grass they were able to forage. I estimated that it was taking them twice as long to consume the same amount of forage, resulting in a very significant reduction in calories per day.

We tested the Nuzzle system with dozens of horses in 2024 and refined the design with the goal of making an effective grazing muzzle that horses could safely and comfortably wear 24/7 and not hate using it.

The system that is in the test market consists of a halter plus 4 Nuzzles. Here is why:

Halter

We quickly learned that a muzzle that is worn 24/7 needs to have a comfortable and well-fitting halter. Our system has a high-quality, adjustable leather halter. It is carefully crafted using premium quality leather, solid brass fittings, and features to attach the Nuzzle. Dual adjustability at the crown and an adjustable chinstrap enable a customized fit. A brass snap at the rolled throat latch makes it simple and quick to take off and put on.

Netting

Netting significantly moderates the consumption of forage and allows normal activities like drinking, licking salt, and mutual grooming. Grazing is tough on netting. When it wears out, simply change out the Nuzzle with fresh netting. Our system includes 3 black OptiNet Nuzzles and one white UltraNet Nuzzle. When holes develop in the black Nuzzle, replace it with another black Nuzzle. The white UltraNet Nuzzle is a more durable option if holes are developing too quickly with OptiNets.

Having 4 Nuzzles in the system should provide plenty for replacements during the season due to wear and tear of the net. More replacement Nuzzles and affordable net patches will be available for sale in the future.

A Note About Safety

Any grazing muzzle can get stuck on things (fencing, branches, horseshoes etc.). Our system has several breakaway features. When/if the system gets snared on something, the zip fasteners or the leather strap are designed to break. The netting and halter are also breakaway. It is possible that a horse will lose a Nuzzle over the season. We consider this a good thing. It is designed to breakaway to prevent potential injury, and there are low cost replacements that are easy to put on.

What Our Customers Say

So nice, we bought it twice! The Optimizer slow feeder.  With the money that we saved on our first purchase, we purchased a second feeder a year later, we monitored the wasted hay from ground feeding, hay huts and the Optimizer. Hands down the Optimizer saved us money compared to the other two hay feed methods.

If you are looking for a safe and reliable hay feeding solution, that will save you money, the Optimizer is the one for you.

The health of my horse has improved, which has made me so happy laughing!!!

- Kaitlyn M

My horse is a 17 year old, off-the-track thoroughbred who lives outside all year. She's a hard keeper, but by getting her the right amount of hay, whenever she wanted it, it was the first winter she didn't need an extra blanket.

- Laura T

Absolute game changer for my very messy Clydesdale. Zero waste, quick filling, and best of all slow feeding all night long.

- Taylor S

I've always had slow feed bags. I needed five or six a day to feed three horses. Last winter with the OptiMizer I could slow feed two bales in one place. This saved me a ton of time not hvaing to refill bags everday, plus I noticed it was way cleaner in the spring.
